My baby J was jaundiced out of the gate, and we had to go in for heel sticks every day for four days after we left the hospital. The first day, mom (my transportation) locked her keys in her car and so we (who live in the burbs, not like downtown NY or something) actually had to take a cab to the place the Dr had sent us to. Which was all the way across town. In February.
When we got there, like you, we were stuck forEVER in the waiting room with sick people. We mentioned to the person at the desk that we had a newnewnewborn and they implied we'd be put at the top of the list, but we weren't. After about that 45-60 minutes you mention, with only 4 of the dozen people in front of us being taken care of, we went back up to the front and asked what was up. The receptionist 's response was bitingly sharp. We called the doctor to see if he knew of any other locations.

Turns out... there was one at the hospital where he was born. Under a mile from our house. With nobody in the waiting room at all. GRR. WHY didn't they send us there first!?

Anyhow, so I totally feel ya on the stupid waiting room-jaundice-heelstick thing. Yay a million times for having incredibly healthy kids over here, but for once I finally had a "sick" war story to commiserate along with you. I'm writing this comment several days later so I know, and I'm glad, she's doing better now.

Also? She's lovely. :)

All four of my kids had breastmilk jaundice, and all four had bilirubin levels that peaked in the 17s. With our first, we were so freaked out that we suspended breastfeeding, and that led to a breastfeeding FAIL. With the others, I just kept nursing them, and their levels started coming down at the 17s, but they stayed yellow (seriously, yellow) until they were 2-3 months old. Ugh. But they're fine now. Super healthy cutie pies! Woot!

Yes, that's what they had me do with my first as well. I just put him on the couch next to me in a semi-sunny spot....he got better fairly quickly. Never had to stop bfing thankfully.

Beautiful baby! She is just a sweetie....enjoy. I always enjoy all those baby sounds...sighs, breathing...love it!

i just read your Mellow Yellow Blog & I have to say "I was there where you are almost 8 years ago (2/6/02). It was my 1st baby boy Jr & I thought he was perfect. After being discharged on Friday, we went home. Then Monday we went for his 1st pediatric apt. He was sent for blood work to check his jaundice. He was at a 18!! So they made us take him straight to the ER and re-check him. I balled my eyes out. So he was admitted & after hours of trying to find a vein for his IV they finally just placed him in his "blue light" tanning bed. We were there for 8 days. And they made me STOP nursing him. I was sooo sad. But finally after 1 day, or 2, i was able to nurse him again. Finally he was released and OK!! I never knew how sweet it was to just drive your child home, until you couldnt due to a hospital stay. I cherished that so much. Then with my 2nd son, i was paranoid with his color. I asked if they were going to check his blood level for jaundice. they said he was OK!! And with my 3rd, no problem. And to this day, my 1st son Jr is a bit darker than his smaller brothers. We tell him its from his tanning days!! I pray everything is fine for your 2nd daughter. You have a beautiful family. Take Care and God Bless.

Ohhh, those little hands...just perfect! Here's wishing her bilirubin levels are perfect now too. The Spohr family deserves happiness and health, not heel pricks and worry. Again - your Annabel is just PERFECT. Thank you for sharing your incredible photos!
Thinking of you from across the country,

Wow, times have changed! When my now 35 year old daughter had jaundice, which started in the hospital before I went home with her (5 days in the hospital back then for a vaginal delivery, 10 days for cesareans!) The nurses tried to get her to drink glucose water from a nipple, but the nurses told me that breast fed babies did not like to take nipples, so.......I tried giving her the same thing when I took her home, which she took some, but not enough. She never had to go under the lights. I used to put her on a pillow and in the window of my apartment, with a bandanna around her eyes. I think it helped a lot! Apparently the medical people didn't offer you to give Annabel some glucose water, I guess.

I live in Michigan and she was born at the end of January. You guys live in sunny California. You could put a bandanna around her eyes and put her on a pillow in a sunny window for a couple minutes a couple times a day. Not too long.

Still, she is beautiful even if she is Mellow Yellow, and I remember that song, lol! :)

Your little Annie is a doll!

I wanted to tell you that my son had the breastmilk jaundice and I too was like, what in the world is this? I had never heard of it. It lasted for about 8 weeks and I was freaking out. My pediatrician assured me he was healthy, as he was eating and growing like a champ. He was just YELLOW! For 8 weeks! I continued breastfeeding and am so glad I did. Everyone kept telling me to try formula and I would for a feeding or two, but I know if I would have kept doing it, he would have started to prefer a bottle.

Just know that Annie is fine if that is what she has.
