Mischief

A while back Sarah asked me to tell a story about a time Maddie was mischievous. There are definitely plenty of moments like that. Maddie was often testing her boundaries, seeing what she could get away with and stick her hands into.

When we were in Arizona in March, Maddie was OBSESSED with the heating and air conditioning unit that was in the room. She would make a mad crawling dash for it the second Mike or I put her on the ground. She’d pull herself up and start trying to turn the knobs, poking her little fingers through the grate. Mike and I spent more time pulling her off the unit than anything else. Every time we told her no? She’d smile and laugh. So hard to get mad at that.

My parents’ house had two things Maddie was obsessed with. The first was the bass speaker that sat next to their TV. It had a deep indent on the front, and Maddie LOVED to stick her entire arm into it. She’d stop for a minute, then when she thought no one was looking, she’d ever so slowly slide her arm back into the speaker. And when we’d tell her no? She’d smile and laugh.

The other forbidden fruit at my parents’ house was another air conditioning vent. It was at floor level, so it was really easy for her to reach. In this video, my mom and I are playing with Maddie when she suddenly decides the vent is MUCH more appealing to her.

if you can’t see the video above, click here.

After I stopped recording the video? She smiled at me and laughed.

    Good Morning Sweetie,

Last night I stumbled upon some of Maddie’s video. I loved every one of them. How beautiful she is and how so unfair it is God took her this soon. You wrote yesterday if perhaps we Stranger Friends have a hard time believing she is real. Heather, I can tell you WITHOUT a doubt, I KNOW she is real.

In fact, too be completely honest, I struggle with the fact she is no longer with us. She is so lively, so strong, so…THERE in the video’s. Mark my words…that baby is real and she is adored and loved even by those of us who never had the complete priviledge to know her, hold her, love her. We love her now though…and I find with every picture, every video and every story, I fall more in love with her thanks to your generous spirit of sharing her with us.

I love the video today..and actually all the video’s. She is so happy ALL THE TIME! LOL. I’m sure she had her moments of being sad, angry, etc. But the Maddie I will always hold dear and so often picture in my mind is one of the beautiful little toddler with the HUGE grin on her face and the happiness and spirit in her eyes.

Thank you for sharing her with us Heather. To you, your words are healing. To us, your words are a gift and I for one….could not be more thankful.

    Thinking of you and yours….
    Your Friend,
    Jenn

What a cute video! I’m so glad you have these videos to share with us. For those of us that never got to meet her, she is so very real to us now.

I thought of you & Maddie a lot this weekend. My 5 wk old nephew, Colin, had emergency surgery yesterday morning to fix the the muscle between his stomach & small intestine. Basically nothing was going through so it all came up. He was losing weight like crazy. Anyway he was in the PICU yesterday & looking at all the wires & tubes & listening to all of those monitors, I just kept thinking of all that little Maddie went through in her short life. God willing Colin gets to come home tomorrow & everything will be fine, but for those little ones whose problems aren’t so simple to fix, my heart breaks for them. And for parents like you who have to watch them go through it. I can’t even imagine what you’ve gone through. I kissed Colin a million times before I left tonight. So very grateful that he’s getting better & at the same time so very sad that little Maddie never got that chance. But because of you & Maddie, I appreciate all five of my nephews & the precious moments I get to spend with them even more now. Thank you & especially to Maddie for giving me that gift.

  65. skip says:

The Department of Energy (DOE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have both endorsed geothermal heat pump systems as among the most energy efficient, environmentally clean, and cost effective systems for temperature control. Homeowners can expect to enjoy a comfortable, reliable, and economical system while also reducing energy use and pollution.

Ground source heat pumps provide heating, air conditioning, and, if so equipped, supply the house with hot water. They are smaller than a traditional heating/cooling unit and can easily be retrofitted into any home. The mechanical components are safely located underground or within the home – which eliminates fears of vandalism or theft. With extreme durability the parts can last a generation and require very little maintenance. These systems do not have fans, so instead of hearing and feeling blasts of air, you will enjoy a quiet, consistent temperature throughout the day. Geothermal heat pumps can even improve your health and reduce allergies because they excel at humidity control, thus there is a reduced chance for mold and mildew growth.

In addition to being practical and providing a luxurious atmosphere, geothermal heat pumps are exceptionally good for the environment and extremely safe. These systems do not have on-site emissions or flammable materials. By eliminating any combustion you do not have to worry about fumes, odors, or carbon monoxide in your home. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, if just 100,000 homes converted to a geothermal heating and cooling system, carbon dioxide emissions could be reduced by 880 million pounds. Currently, atmospheric CO2 is 30% higher than it was 200 years ago and if not reduced can cause serious detrimental global impacts. Geothermal technology offers a wonderful solution to lowering these greenhouse gases.

There has never been a better time to invest in a geothermal heat pump system. Contrary to popular belief, geothermal units are surprisingly affordable and save you more and more money over time. While investing in a geothermal unit is initially more expensive than a traditional system, the annual savings on energy bills more than compensates for the initial output and you can usually expect full payback in three to five years. With efficiency ratings at least three times higher than other heating and cooling systems it is estimated that you can save between 30 to 70% on heating and cooling costs. Also, recent Congressional legislation has provided a 30% tax credit for the installed cost of a residential heat pump system, no cap.

When you consider the durability, comfort, cleanliness, and energy savings it is obvious why the government has endorsed them as the best systems for temperature control!

  66. Jill says:

Isn’t it funny how toddlers don’t care about being told “NO!” The only thing that gets them to stop screwing around with dangerous objects is pain when the object turns on them.
My brother lost the tip of his index finger when he was two from playing with a big floor-standing cigar cutter at our grandfather’s house. He was told numerous times not to touch it and then… WHAM!
The funny thin is he blamed our mother. You could tell from the dirty looks he gave her.
    Kids, they’ll drive you crazy.
