Grandpas Are Special Dudes

Date August 18, 2008

As I’m writing this, there is still about an hour left of my dad’s birthday. He is 30 years older than me, which means next year we’ll both have big birthdays to celebrate.

I didn’t grow up with a grandfather -both of my parents’ fathers passed away before I was old enough to know them. Grandfathers always seemed so cool and mysterious to me because of that. Sort of mythical, in a way. That’s why I think it’s so great to see Maddie interact with my dad.

**

She adores him. Her face lights up when she sees him. I know he lives to make her laugh, and he succeeds every time they are together.

New Favorite!

I am really excited to see their relationship develop over the years. As much as I hope Maddie has a relationship with my mom like the one I had with my grandmother, I have similar desires for Maddie and my dad. I want her to be best friends with both of my parents. I can’t wait to see the memories they create together.

Maddie and Gramps

Happy birthday, Grandpa! And many, many more.

**Yeah, my dad is totally wearing a Lebowski Fest t-shirt. He is just that cool

There is nothing quite like watching our children develop a relationship with our families.

My favorite is my daughter and my brother. He thinks he can fool me by telling me he hates kids (he’s 19) but he will sit and roll the ball and play trains with her for an hour, let her lead him around the house, and generally entertain her whenever he thinks we aren’t looking.

    It’s just great.

I had a really great relationship with both of my grandfathers, one of whom is still around, and I look forward to helping foster that relationship between my daughter and her grandpas. Not to mention her great-granddaddy! Watching these men that I’ve always thought of as so tough and strong act so silly and cuddly with her is so heartwarming.

Maddie is a lucky girl. So, I think, are you to have such a father. I am sure he loves you all the more for making him the grandfather of that beautiful, smiling child.

My daughters scream in terror when they see my father! They have no idea who the deep voiced white haired dude is. He comes over often during the week when my mother is watching the girls- but they still fear him.

    Happy Birthday heather’s cool dad!

Must all be genetic somehow huh?

I wish my dad were still alive for Abbie, as there would never be a dull moment. Take lots of pictures, often!

I never had a grandpa either, so I’m right there with you. Seeing my dad interact with my kids is amazing - I’m seeing a side of him I never really got to see when I was a kid.

    It’s such a special bond!

*Sniff* That hit me in my heartstrings. I never knew either of my grandads either and I always feel like I missed out on some big secret. Maddie is a lucky lil lady. I can’t wait to see my crazy Dad interact with my kiddos ~ he’ll be their one and only!

There’s something so cool about the Grandpa/Grandchild relationship, isn’t there? My kids LOVE my father. LOVE him to pieces.

Our house was close enough to my maternal grandparents that we saw them every week. I adored them both. My grandfather owned a drugstore so he spent a lot of time there but we would look forward to him coming home for dinner on holidays.

My poor dad has 6 kids and no grandkids yet. You’d think one of us would reproduce:)

So sweet. We are lucky to have both sets of grandparents near by. We abuse the grandparent system, but no one seems to complain. It is great seeing the relationships they build with our children.

Girl - your dad is HAWT! I totally feel like a hormone - enraged teenager saying that but day - um! If I were in to older men I might give your mom a run for her money. I bet I’d lose too. Heh. He is very handsome which attests to how well he’s cared for and how he takes care of himself. :)

Maddie loves her granddaddy and I think for many years to come she will continue to forge that relationship with him.

Okay, I was beat to the punch, like, ten times, but I gotta chime in…tell your dad he’s smoking hot. Maybe that’ll make his birthday something special. :) Oh, and Maddie’s cute too. Hey, is there a hot grandpa contest that I can vote for your dad?

Hahahaha! I’m so glad to know I’m not the only pervy who was thinking “dayummm, good looking for a grandpa!” But it’s easy to see where the looks trickle down from and Maddie looking at your dad with those amazing eyes has to be the highlight of his life. Great pics and happy birthday, grandpa.
